Travel Day
Today we are doing the movie thing---Leaving Las Vegas. (No, I haven't seen the movie because I hear it's just too depressing--and I kind of have the same feeling--depressed.) Vegas is a strange city, to say the least, but as one of my favorite movies states "Vegas grows on you" (quoted from the movie Fools Rush In).
I was able to get on the Internet this morning and found a good campground that's 26 miles away from Zion National Park--this is a bit far, but all the ones closer, don't seem to have WiFi available. I sure hope it works! Also, we only plan to go to the Park one day, so the extra miles are not that big of a deal.
Because I had to get on the Internet this morning, we did not get on the road until 10:30 AM.
The terrain was more of the same--sand--for quite some time. We stopped in Mesquite, NV, to eat lunch. But, to my surprise, they had a Wal-Mart; so that was our first stop. We did a bit of stocking up on a few necessities. We then drove to a Mexican restaurant and had lunch.
The temperature is quite hot here--98 degrees (and it was only noon). This city was quite a surprise. It's in the middle of no-man's-land and yet it is quite modern, new, and clean. I think it must be a city that is less than 10 years old. It's quite a thriving golf community. Good thing there is a river running through it to support the greens.
After lunch, we continued northeast, and before I knew it, we were in Arizona. That was a surprise as I hadn't realized we'd go through the extreme northwest corner of Arizona. In addition, I had no idea we were going to go through a mountain pass in Arizona. It was quite beautiful (maybe more so because all we have seen for days is sand) and very unexpected. Here's a couple of pictures just before we got to the pass.
On the left side of the freeway.
On the right side of the freeway.
The following pictures are a progression through the pass. We went up at first, but only a short distance before we headed down very quickly. I had no idea that we were that high or that we were dropping into a valley that quickly. The views, rock formations, and colors were extraordinary. And, in many places, the pass was very narrow. I hope you enjoy these great shots.
And, then, before we knew it, we were in Utah. The first city after the border is St. George. We needed gas by now, so filled up before heading on to Hurricane, UT, for our next stopover.
The campground was very nice. I was surprised, when I asked about visiting Zion National Park, that the host gave us no information--she just directed me to a coffee table and said there should be some information on the table. But, nope.
For dinner, we just nibbled as we were still full from our Mexican lunch. We had good WiFi, so I was able to retrieve a bit of information about our trek to Zion tomorrow.
Sorry
