Travel Day
Yesterday, we finally decided that we are going to California. Dave's old Navy buddy, Terry, really wants to see us. Terry had offered to drive to Albuquerque on his honeymoon to meet with us when we are there to see Dave's sister. But, I told Dave, that's the last thing a woman wants to do on her honeymoon--listen to two old sailors shoot the breeze. So, we decided to detour south and meet up with Terry and his fiance, Sharon.
As we were getting ready to leave, I realized that I had not taken any pictures of Dot and DaveM together. So, I asked Dot to drive down to the campground so I could snap a few pics. DaveH was at the dentist. So, she hopped in her new car and obliged me.
It was hard for us to leave after the picture taking. We had to say goodbye all over again. The two of them tried not to blubber as they said their goodbye's again. Dave really wants to stay and he is NOT ready to go home. So, I know it's ultra hard for him to leave. He and Dot were so close growing up. They had a great time reminiscing the "olden days."
Soon, we left the Midges behind as left the KOA. It was 10 AM. But, we didn't find our way out of Klamath Falls for about an hour. I, unfortunately, forgot to get directions from DaveH or a map, as we were not leaving the same way we entered. We were so discombobulated. Dave got rather annoyed with his navigator, which he rarely does. But, I think he was a bit ultra-sensitive because he had to leave Dot. However, we finally found our way south.
In no time, we were faced with road construction. It was a major stop this time. We sat at the base of Mt. Shasta for about 30 minutes. One of the road-crew ladies came up to us and said that she had to go to the bathroom and asked if she could squat on the road between our car and RV. Yikes. Of course, we quickly offered her our inside commode. I'm sure that's what she was after all along, but she should have just asked us that instead. That's something I guess I won't forget for a while!
While we were traveling past Mt. Shasta, we spotted steam-like mist coming over the top of the mountain. I don't mind telling you, I had visions of Mt. Saint Helen flashing in my brain. I was wondering if this was all she wrote for us and I was thinking, we sure would go out with a bang. But, as we drove further, we realized it was either a snow pack being blown about or a patch of sand being blown. Either way, we relaxed realizing we were not going to kiss our "ash" goodbye today.
Here's a view of the area on the other side of the road from Mt. Shasta. Very desert-like in terrain.
We were shocked when we got to Shasta Lake. The main river leading out of the lake is nearly empty. And, the levels in the lake are really low. Check out the picture of the plane parked next to the boat slips. Kind of cool. But, this picture also shows how low the water levels have fallen.
When we arrived in Red Bluff, we wanted to find a place to eat before checking in at the campground. We had not planned to unhook the RV from the car tonight. There was a Sheri's restaurant across from the campground. We both had a salad: Dave chicken, me spicy beef. And, when I say spicy, I mean spicy!
After our meal, Dave drove me to a grocery store to buy a half-gallon of ice cream as we were all out. And, with my mouth afire, I was all for that!
Next, we checked in at 4 PM. What an tip-top campground. I have never had such great service, felt so welcomed, and seen such a tidy and well-appointed campground. We were treated so well that I thought we had "Mr. & Mrs. Astor" written on our foreheads. It's brand new and very well throughout for today's campers.
Plus...we had GREAT WIFI. What a treat. We both had access! And, we didn't have to pay any extra for it.
I called my cousins in Sacramento and Stockton to see if they could get together with us the next day for lunch as we drove southward. But, Dena (the one in Sacramento) was going to babysit for her new grandson. Launa (the one in Stockton) was available and she invited Dave and I to come to their house to have sandwiches with her and her husband, Steve. With all those plans made, we settled in to enjoy the evening. The campground was relatively empty. We sat outside for a bit to watch the campground's water fountains and lights, which lulled us into sleepyville in no time.
Sorry
