The Lakes RV & Golf Resort
Travel Day
This morning we got out of the park early as we hadn't unhooked the RV, nor did we hook up to the sewer connection. So, it's easier to keep on truckin' when you don't have those extras outside to do.
We arrived at Launa (my cousin) and Steve's home about 1:30 PM. We had such a great time seeing them again and catching up.
She had a great sandwich spread for us including fresh fruit and homemade brownies. Yum.
While sharing with Launa about the Jacobus family (her mother was my dad's youngest sister, Eloise) she shared a few things that she had in some photo albums. One great item was the personal property sale of items from the Jacobus' last farm. This document resolves the issue as to where the family finally landed after leaving Letcher, SD. So, I believe my dad and Eloise's school records are stored in Salem, SD. They graduated from Spencer (South Dakota) High School, but because of their high school being torn down and then the tornado that struck the town, we are unable to obtain the records. I may make a call to the school when I get home because they were in the process of painting when Dave and I were there.
Here's the poster that Launa had of the family's sale.

Because you have heard me talk in this blog about my father's family, I thought I'd share a picture of his siblings. This picture was taken sometime around 1942-1944.

From left to right (all now deceased) birth order in brackets:
- Wilmuth [3] (daughter Kay resides in Ventura, CA)
- Keith [4] (daughter Pam resides in Hoschton, GA)
- Everett [1] (daughter Judy resides in Santa Ana area, CA; daughter Karen resides in San Diego, CA)
- Eloise [5] (daughter Launa resides in Stockton, CA; daughter Dena resides in Sacramento, CA)
- Celeste [2] (never married)
In addition, Launa gave me a clipping of an interview that my dad gave the Salem, South Dakota newspaper in 1942. The article conveys the events of the attack on the USS Marblehead cruiser on which my dad served during WWII.
Note: If you are interested in reading this historical artifact, see the blog entry dated September 4, 2008, and titled: Keith Jacobus Tells Thrilling Tale of War on Baord Cruiser Marblehead.
Launa also gave me an original newspaper clipping of the wedding announcement of my mom and dad.
After lunch and our historical recaps, we headed out of Stockton with full intentions of going down I-5. But, at the last minute we decided it would be fun to go down US 99 instead. We have been up and down I-5 many times, but rarely took US 99 when we lived in California.
We found a great place, kind of upscale, in Chowchilla. We pulled in at 5:59 PM, just as the host was locking up. So, we just made it in without having to do the night registration. We opted for the "cheaper" sites, away from the mini-lake and water fountains. And, we did not have a picnic table. Guess you have to provide your own when you are that upscale! HA. Again, we didn't unhook the car or hook up to the sewer. We wanted to get a quick start in the morning as we have another very long driving day ahead of us. California is one heck of a long state from north to south!
Launa had given us a fresh-baked loaf of chocolate Friendship bread. So, that's what we had for dinner. Because we had the vanilla ice cream left over from what we purchased in Red Bluff, we doubly enjoyed it. Launa's father, Uncle Jimmy, had taught me years ago to pour ice cold milk over cake. And, I added that to my share as well. I was in Happy Tummy Heaven!
We had good WIFI and CATV tonight. I was too tired to do much on the blog, but I did manage to get one entry completed.
