Day 20 - USA Tour - DePere, WI

Overnight: DePere, WI
Sightsee Day:
- The actual Green Bay
- Green Bay area

After our wake-up coffee, we puttered a bit and then got dressed to explore the Green Bay area.

On our way through Green Bay at large, we passed a Harley-Davidson dealership and noticed what must have been 300 bikers all lined up and ready to roll. Cars were parked along the main road and picnic blankets were spread on the grassy areas with eager children (and adults) awaiting what was sure to be a parade. Dave and I not wanting to miss out on the experience, pulled over to join the on-lookers. Soon the police arrived to block the road. Sure enough, here comes a myriad of bikers. We never did find out what the celebration was for, but it was fun to observe. The pictures I could take don’t do justice to the hundreds of bikers that were present. I think it probably lasted about 30 minutes to get all of the bikers out of the dealership and down the road.

After the parade, we continued on toward the bay. Soon we found ourselves in the city dump. Of course, this is typical of us to find the “scenic” route. We quickly realized that the map we were given was not the best. Street names didn’t seem to match the roads drawn. But, it was good enough to get us out of there, even if the names didn’t match.

We drove through a restored area of the old downtown, which looked nice. We continued on and finally arrived at the southern tip of the bay. Along the shoreline, there were mostly homes—no businesses, really. There were a couple of parks and an amusement park, which we didn’t go into. Some homes along the bay were conservative and kind of run down, not really fixer-uppers, but not in the best of condition. I was surprised to see homes along the water that were possibly affordable. As we drove eastward, the homes changed to be more elegant, but not mansions by any means.

When we turned around to come back toward Green Bay, some fish along the water’s edge caught our eyes. They were swirling around and raising fins above the water. Their fins were reddish and we couldn’t figure out what they were. Then, all of a sudden they started jumping out the water. I have just added a YouTube video to this entry. I hope it works correctly because I have never does this before. Send an email to me if this video doesn't work, please. (Read on to find out the kind of fish.)

We saw a restaurant earlier on our drive along the bay and went back to eat lunch. When we stopped, they were not open for lunch. They suggested a restaurant up the hill called The Bluffs. Sounded really nice, so off we went. When we arrived, it was a bar & grill. All I could think of was repeating the smoky environment that we had experienced at the Ghost Town Bar & Grill. I was not willing to repeat that discomfort. So, I went inside to see how much smoke there was. It wasn’t bad and they had another entrance to the glassed-in dining room that didn’t go through the bar. So, we ventured. We had a nice view of the bay. The food was good, but we most enjoyed a conversation with the owner. We learned a lot about the area and found out that the fish we had seen along the shore were carp. It seems the southern end of the bay is quite polluted (mostly because of the paper mills) and the carp just grow and grow (in size and numbers) because, even before the pollution, they tasted so bad that no one would eat them. Perch is the favorite fish around this area.

After lunch, we continued into town to see the Packer’s stadium. We have opted not to go on the tour of the stadium (with the reunion group), so we thought we should at least drive by on Lombardi Avenue.

Our next stop was to check out the hotel (Radisson) where we will be staying with the reunion group (Monday through Thursday night). On the way, we passed a nice subdivision, which we thought was very indicative of a California subdivision. I guess I’m really surprised that in an area where there is so much snow in the winter, the roof-lines are not steep. I would think the snow would be so heavy they wouldn’t want it staying on the roof very long. But, then, what do I know about snow-covered roofs?

After our journey, we headed back to the campground. We got back just in time for the tornado warnings and the heavy rain and thunderstorms. The storms continued all evening.

With all the rain, the WiFi is out again. And, if the rain continues, it will be out even longer. Bah Humbug.

I am still reading my Civil War for Dummies book. I am now in Part 2 (starting in Chapter 5), which covers a view of the governments and armies. So many facts to learn and I have to re-read much of it to get a grip on all the little details and timelines.

Well, with the ratta-tap-tap of the rain falling on the RV and making me sleepy, I’ll say “goodnight.”
