Travel Day
Today we are off to the Shelby, MT, area to do one of our final ancestor searches. We had to make sure we were completely "dumped" as the next park doesn't have sewer hookups. Our gray water fills up fast (that's sink and shower water). We are not sure if the gauge is a bit off, the slant at which we are parked is affecting it, or the tank truly doesn't empty enough. We seem to have a hard time getting the reading below 1/3 full. After that chore was done, we hit the road about 10:30 AM.
Our drive today takes us over the mountains back eastward and over the Continental Divide one more time on highway MT200, north on I-15, and finally west on US2.
We followed the Clark Fork River for many miles as we ascended into the Rocky Mountain foothills.
We stopped at the crest of the range and got some sandwiches at a roadside rest.
The terrain changed quite drastically once we descended into the valley. The plants became a desert variety. And, as you can see, there were spires that appeared out of nowhere.
Around Fort Shaw, MT, which is west of Great Falls about 20 miles, we noticed at least 4 minuteman-type missile installations. If we had not visited the installation in Wall, SD, we would never have known what they were. We noticed at one installation east of Fort Shaw, there were about 4 official cars parked in the fenced-in area. The men seemed to be very intent on doing something there. I wondered, given the current war situation between the countries of Georgia and Russia, if they were checking the installation for readiness. Kind of a little un-nerving!
We chose this campground because it was the only one that offered WiFi anywhere near Shelby. We are 25 miles from Shelby, which is quite a drive. But, WiFi is very important to us, so there ya go.
We took a quick drive through Shelby before heading to Cut Bank. Cut Bank seems to be a more modern town than Shelby. But, both are very isolated with few options for shopping or eating.
Here's Cut Bank's claim to fame! Check out the information shown below the penguin.
The campground is located on the edge of a cliff. So, the view is quite spectacular. It's hard to tell this from the first picture that includes the statue, but we drove below the campground to take some pictures looking up at the campground. You can see the RVs at the top of the hill. We never did find out who the statue is supposed to represent.
I fixed some leftovers and we retired fairly early. We had great CATV, but no Bravo channel. So, I am getting very far behind on the Project Runway show. Most campgrounds that offer CATV, do not include Bravo. I remember our cable company telling me that Bravo charges cable companies quite a bit to run the channel, so unless you get an "extended" package, no Bravo. I know this is quite important for all of you to know. Hee Hee
Tomorrow we journey into Shelby. We are trying to locate Dave's great-grandmother's grave site and any information we can locate about her and her family.
Sleep tight knowing that our missiles are ready at a moment's notice!
