Overnight: Wall, SD
Sightseeing Day:
- Wall Drug Store
- Badlands National Park
Surprise, surprise. No trains this morning. Humm. And, I was all prepared to use them as an alarm this morning.
We had a little drizzle this morning, but nothing much. So, we headed to Wall Drug store for homemade donuts and other breakfast items. I will say that the donuts were good (mum's the word on the rest of the food). Because Dave is a veteran, his coffee and donut was free. I had to pay 5 cents for my coffee. Refills were 5 cents also. Kind of a cute gimmick. And, of course, let's not forget the FREE ICE WATER!
Dave and I did meet a couple of new friends, though.
Next we walked around town a bit. It's really a small town, about 3 blocks long. Dave found some buffalo-style gun mounts to buy. I held on to my pennies. I'm waiting for the Black Hills Gold jewelry!
After deciding we could live without most of the stuff they had for sale, we headed off to the Badlands. We started today in the same place we left off yesterday (where the goats were).
Of course, Dave spots goats at the bottom of the ravine. We drove onward and the vistas were as beautiful as yesterday, but quite different in most parts. Slowly the high spires dissolved into grasslands.
In the picture of me, I'm pointing to the location of the goats down in the valley. The picture of the goats is a very close-up view of them in the valley.
We came upon the largest prairie dog concentration in the park. And, right there near the dogs were two antelope and some buffalo in the distance. We couldn't believe it. Nothing would do, of course, but Dave and I had to trek out, through the buffalo chips, to get as close as we could to the antelope. And, we got within about 20 feet. It was so cool.
As we drove onward, we came upon a herd of bison. They are awesome. The park doesn't fence them off from the roads. So, we had an unobstructed view of them. I would guess we were about 40 feet from them. But, we certainly didn't venture out to view them any closer. They're just a bit too large and powerful to run from. We did watch them roll in the dirt, grunt at each other, and munch away on their grass. There were several babies in the herd, but they were quite a bit farther away from us.
As we were oohhing and ahhhing over the prairie dogs, lo and behold a badger darted out between them. Dave was able to catch a snapshot of it. It's one quick critter!
We finished up the drive and stopped for a DQ Blizzard on the way back to the RV. Dave took a nap and I worked on this blog.
I cooked pork chops, canned white potatoes, and veggies for dinner. No ice cream tonight as we had that for lunch. So, I'll settle down with a couple of Oreo Mint cookies and a cool glass of milk. Good night to all!
Sorry
